The explosive growth
of the Internet since the early 1990’s has made an impact
on our culture and indeed our world that will be compared
in the future to the automobile, manned flight and nuclear
weapons. The Internet is a tremendous source for good with
informational and educational material in abundance. Unfortunately
the Internet also has a dark side.
Letters and eyewitness accounts testify to us every day on
the tragic destruction of relationships because of un-controlled
Internet behaviors. Violent and erotic online games have stolen
the innocence of our youth. Unmonitored chat room activity
leads to abducted children and broken marriages on a daily
basis. Illegal online gambling has enslaved a whole new generation
of addicted gamblers.
And it isn’t just the deviant of heart that fall prey
to these Internet activities. God fearing men and women of
every occupation, background and financial status have been
afflicted. It used to be said that only those looking for
trouble on the Internet would find themselves sinking into
an ever-deeper abyss. Unfortunately the truth is far more
insidious. Because of the wild and uncontrolled nature of
the Internet, even the most innocent Internet user will be
exposed within minutes to material that would have garnered
jail time just thirty years ago.
No matter what faith background a person has lived, it is
impossible to ignore the damage being done to relationships
because of the Internet. And for us Christians it should be
even more apparent! That is why every family member, not just
children need filtered Internet. Purity of mind and soul is
important and blind acceptance of destructive material will
result in irreversible destruction to our relationships within
families, our country and God. Filtered Internet is not the
complete answer but it is a big step in protecting yourself
and your family. Ask yourself and your spouse, “Why
do we not have filtered Internet service?”
